Step 1: Start by Finding Your Subject
Dumpster diving, yard sales and raiding Granny’s attic are all great ways to score. Ignore the condition and current color by focusing on the shape, size and lines of the piece. Do you love it? Is it a fit? Great! Let’s pick a shade. This is where you can let your inner wild child out. If your favorite shade is the blue of the Aegean Sea or the brightest orange peel, don’t be afraid. Step 2: Find the Right Paint Colors
This is the fun part. Take time to find the right paint color for each piece of furniture so that it fits in with your décor.EXPLORE ALL PAINT COLORS
Step 3: Time to Prep!
Remove all of the hardware and give it a good scrub down with a degreaser (I use TSP). Follow that with a light sanding* to give the paint something to grip on to. Then it’s time for the color—a quart of paint will cover quite a lot of furniture. Finally, you can add a coat of polyurethane if you want a more durable finish (water based polyurethane is best to avoid yellowing commonly caused with oil based polyurethane). I often skip this step but I would recommend it if you are using the piece in a high-traffic area.Allow your piece to dry and cure completely (which can take up to 30 days) before giving it a full beating. Voila! You now have a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture in a color and shape you love that cost you almost nothing.
