Playing With Kitchen Wall Colors

DIY Blogger Nicole Balch of Making It Lovely tells Glidden®  what a difference a fresh coat and new color can make — even when the color is white!
Visualizing Your Kitchen Walls
When I last shared my kitchen, I mentioned that I had selected yellow for kitchen wall colors as a nostalgic tie to my grandmother’s kitchen, but after five years of it in my own home, I was ready for something new. I have since painted, and after contemplating just about every color, I settled on white. Yes, white, from a gal who loves mixing patterns and color. And I love the way it turned out!

It’s funny, because the kitchen wall color was white when my husband and I first bought our house. Back then, mixed with dated, deteriorating wood cabinets and unfinished trim, it looked sad.  What a difference a fresh coat of paint can make.

I chose yellow when my husband and I remodeled the kitchen in 2007 because it worked well with our wood floor and trim, and I loved that it reminded me of my grandmother’s kitchen.  Yellow paint colors are great for kitchens - they are warm, sunny and inviting.  But, after several years, we were ready for a change.

At first, when I repainted the walls white, I wasn’t so sure I liked it. Kitchen wall colors can vary so much, and with white cabinets and neutral wood floors, I could go in any direction I wanted. And here I was choosing white! It took a little getting used to, but hanging a bold black-and-white print helped make the color feel deliberate. I went from feeling unsure, to falling head over heels for the clean, white space.

Now, I can play with the color scheme by swapping out the accessories, or even just by bringing in a big pitcher full of flowers. White kitchens photograph beautifully, but I can tell you that it’s also possible for them to feel inviting and homey — mine does.
